Apple warns iPhone users in 98 countries of spyware attacks

Apple warns iPhone users in 98 countries of spyware attacks. This is the second warning this year, following a similar alert in April to users in 92 countries. Since 2021, the tech giant has sent these warnings to users in over 150 countries. The latest warnings, sent out on Wednesday, did not reveal who the attackers are or which countries received the notifications.

Apple’s message to affected users said: “Apple detected that you are being targeted by a mercenary spyware attack that is trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID -xxx-.” Apple advised users to take this warning seriously as it believes the threat is significant.

Users in India are among those who received these recent warnings. In October, Apple sent similar alerts to several journalists and politicians in India. Amnesty International later found the Pegasus spyware on the iPhones of some prominent Indian journalists. Pegasus is a highly invasive spyware created by the Israeli company NSO Group. Apple emphasized the sensitive nature of its threat detection methods, warning that revealing more details could help attackers avoid future detection. Apple now refers to these incidents as “mercenary spyware attacks” instead of “state-sponsored” attacks, as it did last year.
